As the game continued on, I was in a frustrating, nebulous spot. Marcus and I hadn’t had a chance to build a relationship outside of the clinic, so I didn’t feel like I had any real right to enter his inner circle. To be one of the people immediately let in on his condition.

Still, I couldn’t just sit around and do nothing. I decided on a single text and phone call. Nothing to overwhelm him or seem like I was butting in where I didn’t belong. But something to make clear I was concerned and wanted to hear from him.

I texted first:

Me: Hey Marcus. I obviously saw the game and I’m worried about you. Please give me an update when you’re feeling up to it, and if you have any questions I might be able to answer, please ask. Hang in there.
